Martial arts adventure sifu1/6/2024 ![]() ![]() ![]() Yes, that makes for a soulslike grind, but the aging mechanic certainly makes for a nice dynamic approach to it, even though the prospect of having to defeat all five of the game’s bosses and plough through all five areas will feel daunting for quite some time. Death eventually becomes permanent, but upgrade certain skills enough times with the XP you gather and you’ll keep the skill the next time you start all the way at the beginning again. It’s a loop that’s made possible by a magic pendant that you carry, but obviously it can’t help you forever. And while the effect isn’t strong at first, once you get older you’ll find that your health bar get smaller – though your years of experience also improve your combat abilities. In order words, your sixth death means you’ll have aged six years when you return to the scene. At first, by a year, but every subsequent death adds another year to the penalty you receive upon death. Starting with that one before we dive into the combat itself, you’ll find yourself resurrected when you die, but you’ll have aged in the process. But while that could have easily been the setup for a brawler not too unlike Streets of Rage 4, Sifu is a martial arts action adventure that was heavily influenced by soulslike mechanics while infusing it with its own unique aging mechanic. This particular story revolves around a fighting style called Pak Mei and a young martial artist seeking revenge against the man who killed his entire family years ago, back when the patriarch of the family was still the killer’s Pak Mei master. The game is firmly rooted in the tradition of old kung fu films with their stories of betrayal and revenge. We can see Sifu resonating with a much wider audience though, for a number of reasons. ![]() To us, it stood out because it dared to be different, and the developer isn’t shying away from that with Sifu either. After all, Sloclap’s only game prior to Sifu was Absolver, which wasn’t universally loved and ended up being more of a niche hit. We’ve actually been a bit surprised at all the interest that Sifu’s been getting from the general public. ![]() Here’s our take on the game, based on our time with it using a PlayStation 5. It’s the first of February’s “big releases” we’re covering, and it doesn’t disappoint. Sifu launches on February 8th for PS4, PS5, and PC via the Epic Games Store. In a month with releases like Elden Ring and Dying Light 2, one of the most eagerly anticipated games was Sloclap’s Sifu. You can pre-order the Deluxe Edition now for early access to the game starting February 6th. It is still unknown how this will impact the gameplay or if this is just an aesthetic feature, but it is supposed to signify the lessons you have learned along your journey to a perfect run. The short film also depicts the unique feature of Sifu in which the main character gradually ages every time you die. Many viewers in the comments were impressed with the fighting choreography and some even deemed the short film deserving its own series. The main character is seen fighting multiple enemies at a time, with choreography rivaling that of big blockbuster films. Although the story seems very basic, the martial arts displayed in this live-action trailer is top-notch. The main baddie, Fajar, is responsible for killing the protagonist’s family and thus he now wants to seek revenge on his own terms. The trailer sheds some light on the main character by giving us an explanation for his thirst for vengeance. Sifu is a third-person action game that will feature hand-to-hand combat as you take control of a Kung-Fu student on a path of revenge. The developers at Sloclap have partnered with director Christopher Clark Cowan to create this live-action martial art short film. PlayStation console exclusive, Sifu, is launching in just a few days and a frantic live-action trailer has just been released to turn up the hype. ![]()
